Garden peony

Garden peony is a perennial medicinal plant that belongs to the peony family. It is characterized by pink to purple-red flowers, blooming in June. The flowers or the root, which is strongly antiseptic and antispasmodic, act as a diuretic, and are used for medicinal purposes.

The peony root contains the alkaloid peregrinine, tannins, starch, sugar, organic acids, calcium oxalate, sucrose and glycosides. The peony flowers contain tannins, mucilage, peonidin and glucose. In cosmetics, it is mainly used in the fight against skin aging, as it improves its elasticity and maintains balanced hydration. The peony promotes the growth of new skin cells and brightens the skin. It also helps regenerate cracked and mechanically damaged skin. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Peony is therefore also used to support blood circulation in tissues and it helps soothe skin prone to inflammatory reactions.
